Meditation: An Unexpected Journey

Throughout my teaching career, I’ve explored a plethora of techniques to facilitate better learning experiences for my students. However, meditation, a tool I initially employed for personal use, has surprisingly turned out to be one of the most impactful in the classroom setting.

The backdrop to this revelation was rather straightforward. Around 5 years ago, a Grade 7 class I was teaching at the time, students displayed a concerning pattern – high levels of anxiety, stress, and nervousness, especially when assessments were on the horizon. It wasn’t just about the occasional jitter; it was the frequent furrowed brows, restless shuffling, and whispered concerns that became hard to ignore. As an educator, my job isn’t just to impart knowledge but to ensure a conducive learning environment, and it became clear that the weight of anxiety was a formidable barrier.

During that period, I had been delving into meditation for my own sense of balance and calm. Observing the heightened stress in my students, a thought occurred: “Could a brief session of meditation be the pause they need?” On an experimental basis, I introduced a 5-minute visualisation meditation session. The essence was simple: picturing oneself in a state of confidence, joy, and accomplishment, coupled with reinforcing affirmations like, “I possess everything I need to thrive; it’s all within me.”

”Not only did students start requesting these meditation breaks more frequently, but the classroom’s overall dynamic also started shifting.”

The initial hesitancy to meditate soon gave way to appreciation. Not only did students start requesting these meditation breaks more frequently, but the classroom’s overall dynamic also started shifting. The changes were multifaceted: increased concentration during lessons, healthier student interactions, and a noticeable boost in enthusiasm for tackling new topics. Perhaps the most heartening feedback was when several students mentioned how they felt less overwhelmed during assessments.

Realising the tangible benefits meditation brought to my classroom, I decided to deepen my understanding. This journey led me to centre my Master’s thesis around the potential of integrating meditation into school curriculums. The research process was enlightening, revealing not just the immediate positive effects but also the long-term benefits on students’ emotional and academic well-being.

Inspired by these findings, I’ve taken to this platform to chronicle my experiences, hoping it might inspire other educators or even parents. In forthcoming posts, I’ll delve into detailed observations, research insights, and practical tips on embedding meditation seamlessly into the school environment. Given the promising results I’ve witnessed firsthand, I genuinely believe it’s a path worth exploring for the holistic development of our students.
